Grave of Hussar Captain Kamilló Lersch

Cemeteries, tombstones, grave sites

In the issue of the Pesti Hírlap published on April 19, 1898, we can read the following: ; ; "The tragedy of a hussar captain. ; The other day we reported the sudden death of hussar captain Kamilló Lersch. Captain Lersch was a division commander of the 9th Honvéd Hussar Regiment in Marosvásárhely. In the first days of April he suddenly disappeared from Marosvásárhely. A few days later a friend received a letter from him from Szamosujvár, but the letter was so incomprehensible that even then they suspected that Lersch had gone mad. On Good Friday Captain Lersch came to Budapest and drove straight to the Schwarzer Conservatory. He looked for the doctor and said to him: ; - Please, take me under treatment, because I am crazy. ; He spoke with a smiling face and the doctor at first thought that the captain was joking, he started laughing, whereupon Lersch shouted at him: ; - Don't laugh! I will chop up anyone who doesn't believe my words! ; The doctor explained He told him that no one could be admitted to the sanatorium without a prior medical examination and advised the captain to go to the garrison hospital first. He did so and returned a few hours later with a regimental doctor who stated that Lersch was a dangerous lunatic. The captain complained of a headache and went to bed. The next day, hundreds of letters arrived at the captain's address at the sanatorium. Most of them were price lists for seeds, car grease, old weapons, horse tools, etc. He also received a beautiful villa plan. In the afternoon, a whole army of financial agents reported to the sanatorium: for two or three days, they wrote letters to the addresses of the advertisements in the newspaper and asked for the answers to be sent to the Schwarzer Institute. Lersch died of meningitis on the fifth day. He was only 41 years old, a strong man, and he would have been appointed major this year."
