Polish Cross – Pietà in your Fairytale

Sacral small monument

In Lidertejed, next to the sports field, we can now find the painful statue of the Virgin with a cross, which, due to its inscription – and of course its previous “existence in Szerdahely” – must be classified as a monument of Dunaszerdahely. ; On the pedestal under the cross and the Mary holding the dead Christ taken from it in her lap, we can notice the following text: ; “Szerdaheli / Erzsebet Lengyel / Gontzol ; Gyorgy / Ozvegye Az Isten / bigiő ; Dutsosegere / tsinaltatta / MDCCXCIV”. ; In other words, the cross was erected by none other than the donor of the Holy Trinity Column next to the St. George Church, that is, Erzsébet Lengyel, in 1794. ; Its fate between 1794 and 1920 is still a mystery; it was probably the central cross of the cemetery on Pódafai Road (between Szerdahely and Pódafa), which was used for a short time, and which the 20th century chronicler only heard about from the elderly, and which “has not been in use for at least one hundred and fifty years”. According to the photographs, this pietà was already standing next to the entrance to the church at the beginning of the 20th century, in the place of the current Immaculata statue. ; The small sacred monument was removed from the city after 1945, and then the Pódafa municipality had it moved from its original location to the border of their village and renovated. It still proclaims “the greater glory of God” there today.
