Kutscherfeld Palace

Building, structure

The Kutscherfeld Palace is a three-storey, gable-roofed Baroque building built in 1762 on the western corner of the Main Square. It was built on the site of two or three earlier medieval houses, utilizing their foundations and some wall details. The street and courtyard wings of the house, which stands on a corner plot with a rectangular floor plan, are arranged around a small, rectangular courtyard. Its ornate, stone-framed main gate, above which a wrought-iron balcony juts out on the first floor, overlooks the Main Square. ; The palace was built by Leopold von Kutserfeld, who was head of the Hungarian Chamber from 1760 and administered the Habsburgs' Mosonmagyaróvár estate. The house was probably designed by Jakob Fellner. In 1813, the palace came into the possession of Count Imre Esterházy through purchase. The Esterházys hosted Anton Grigorjevics Rubinstein here in 1847. A plaque placed on the building in 1959 announces that the famous Russian composer and pianist lived and worked in this house. ; The house now houses the French Embassy and the French Institute.
