Statue of Christ with a spade

Sacral small monument

Initially, it stood in a common place, near the present-day artesian well. It was placed in the Konkolyi Garden behind the mansion, due to a rumor about Miklós Konkoly-Thege. According to one explanation, the erected object was "the gardener of the great lord", but according to the informant's husband, the locals mocked it by saying that the statue depicts Miklós Konkoly-Thege himself, leaning on a spade and looking at the farmers. ; "(...) the beautiful artistic statue that adorns the market square, and which is similar to hardly any other village in the country. Konkoly also brought this one from Italy. It depicts the Savior - with a spade in his hand. That is why the villagers do not respect it much - because, they say, it is not Jesus, but the gardener of the "great lord"." (Vasárnapi Ujság) ; However, from the next part we do not learn anything about the Christ statue. "See - says Miklós Konkoly - I, as a Calvinist, value the memory of Bishop József Király of Pécs so much that I have an oil-painted portrait of József Király hanging on the mantelpiece of my dining room in Ó-Gyalla. And in my study, above my desk, is the crucifix inlaid with tortoiseshell, before which Bishop József Király prayed. By the way, above my desk in Budapest there is also a holy picture depicting the taking down of Christ's body from the cross. Because we are such patient Calvinists. (...)" (Magyar Nemzet) ; The building facing west was demolished by the communists, its base may have been walled up in the amphitheater being built in the park (together with the statue?). (informant) ; The photograph was found in the private photo archive of the Feszty family. The photo was probably taken by Zsuzsanna Szántó (Dabas) in 1931.
