Public statue of Mary
Sacral small monument
“…The cult of Mary was very strong in Szklabonya. There is a statue of the Sorrowful Mother, the Heart of Mary and the Virgin of Lourdes in the church. Mikszáth’s well-known short stories include his writing entitled The Virgin Mary of Gózon, but he also mentions Father Bizi in his writings, who was punished by God just when he brought a picture of Mary for the church. We do not know whether this was true, but there are other memories of the cult of Mary in Szklabonya. It was near Mikszáth’s birthplace (this house no longer stands) that the locals erected a beautiful statue of the Madonna in 1830. The colored statue stands on a high pedestal under a zinc roof. Mary has a crown on her head and is holding a baby in her arms.”
