Kossuth statue

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

Ármin Vámbéry describes in his book My Struggles when Lajos Kossuth gave a speech in front of a pub while traveling to the Bratislava parliament: ; "I had no further time to stay in Bratislava. I looked for a job in the countryside, accepted the offer of a poor Jewish villager from Máriavölgy living in the vicinity of Bratislava and took up a job as a tutor for him for a few months. Here, in the quiet valley of the Carpathians, and then at home, in Dunaszerdahely, I could live my studies in peace and quiet again. From Dunaszerdahely, I sometimes visited the Jewish innkeeper of the neighboring village of Vásárút, who was a relative of my stepfather. I was there on the very day that Lajos Kossuth, who had incited the Hungarian people of Csallóköz to undertake a military venture in Austria, arrived in Vásárút. He wanted to speak in front of the inn. A barrel was rolled in front of the door and I was standing there when Kossuth stepped from a chair onto the barrel and began to speak. His words caused an indescribable uproar among the people. Old people and young men - almost children - left their parents and armed with scythes and pitchforks, they followed Kossuth: and the mass of the people's agitators set off towards Vienna. This was an inexhaustible era of enthusiasm." ; ; At the offering of Endre Halasy Nagy, historian, journalist, member of the Budapest Széchenyi Society, the circular sculpture of Lajos Kossuth by the sculptor András Vetró from Kézdivásárhely was inaugurated on the former national flag in memory of the 100th anniversary of his death, on Sunday, March 13, 1994 at 2:30 p.m. on Vásárút. ; Organizers of the inauguration ceremony: Vásárút Municipality, Dunaszerdahely Regional Committee of the Csemadok. ; Speeches were given by: Lajos Földes – president of the Csemadok organization, Ferenc Kovács – mayor of Vásárút, László Kovács – vice-president of the Csemadok regional committee, Zoltán Lakner – deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Miklós Duray – president of the Együttélés PM. ; The Vásárút mixed choir performed in the festive program. ; ; The local government later named the space between the Catholic church and the cultural center Kossuth Square.
