Memorial to the Martyrs of the Communist Labor Movement and Fascism

The Monument to the Martyrs of the Communist Labor Movement and Fascism was built in 1971 during the socialist Czechoslovakia and was created by János Nagy. The aim of the monument was to perpetuate the memory of the people belonging to the communist labor movement and the victims of the fight against fascism, in line with the official ideology of the era. The monument emphasizes the anti-fascist interpretation of World War II and focuses on the respect for the “martyrs” who, according to the narrative of the system, sacrificed their lives for social progress. In its form and message, it bears the marks of socialist realism, which emphasizes heroism and sacrifice. After the change of regime, the meaning of the monument was partially transformed: today it can be interpreted not only as an ideological monument, but also as a historical document, which testifies to the political and social relations in Komárom in the 20th century.
