Statue of György Klapka in Komárom
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
In memory and honor of the city's heroic defender, the people of Komárom inaugurated a statue on November 15, 1896. Its creator was József Róna. From that day on, the wreath-laying ceremony of the statue on March 15 was the biggest holiday in the city. During the first Czechoslovak Republic, the people of Komárom did not (could) lay wreaths. Between 1939 and 1944, March 15 was again a significant holiday. In the fall of 1945, soldiers of the Czechoslovak army removed the statue from its place. It lay in the Komárom fortress for twenty years. ; In 1965, on the 700th anniversary of Komárom being declared a city, it was placed in the public square again, but not in its original place, but in the park in front of the Officers' Pavilion. In 1990, the statue, restored by János Nagy, whose upper pedestal was also sculpted by him and the lower one by Gyula Mag, was returned to its original location, on the square in front of the Town Hall, at the initiative of the city council and the Komárom branch of the Csemadok.
