Monument to the displaced and deported

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

Udvard is a settlement located 9 kilometers from Érsekújvár. Between 1946 and 1948, 1,200 Hungarian residents were deported from the previously Hungarian village, and Slovaks arrived in their place. ; On a tall stone pillar, we see an open palm with a human eye in it. On the stumbling blocks around the monument, the names of the 69, mostly Hungarian, settlements where the deportees were resettled can be read. (The inscriptions also include the name of Dachau, where the Jews living in Udvard were previously deported, and there were Hungarians who ended up in the Sudetenland in the Czech Republic.) ; The creator of the monument, Ferenc Lebó, is a descendant of one of the Udvard families that settled in Hungary.

;

About the interpretation of the work: ; The hand protruding from the stone may refer to sinking or immersion. In this case, it is about the sinking and scattering of a community. (See e.g.: "he wept, where a nation sinks") ; I have a harder time with the eyes. Perhaps the eyes themselves are the creator, the seer, the one who makes people see, who also wants to express their personal relationship. They identify with the community. (He places himself in the palm of his hand.) ; The eyes can also be the eyes of the Almighty (and all-seeing). We can also conclude this from the almost triangular upper eyelid. The eyes watch over the deported. In a broader context, the eyes of God mean the glorification of the victims. ; When I first saw the monument 4-5 years ago, "at first glance" the eyes reminded me of pain. The eyes are the most sensitive part of our body. At that time, I thought that the depiction of the eyes is also suitable for expressing pain.
