Kisfaludy graves
Cemeteries, tombstones, graves
Representatives of the Transdanubian noble family settled in Szenc in the 19th century, when the noble István Kisfaludy (1808-1866. July 19.) began his work here as a public school teacher. István came from Pápa in Veszprém County, and in 1836 he married Teréz Lassú, who was of local origin. We know their sons Zsigmond (born 18 July 1837), Móric (born 21 February 1841), Vince (born 30 January 1843) and Károly (born 22 April 1845). Móric followed in his father's footsteps. He taught, and then between 1866 and 1891 he was the notary of Szenc. Two of the brothers, Zsigmond and Vince, chose a ecclesiastical career. Of them, Zsigmond is the better known. He completed his secondary school studies in Bratislava, Győr and Nagyszombat. He studied theology in Esztergom and was ordained a priest in 1861. He was a chaplain in Somorja, then in Dunaszerdahely (1868), then a priest in Illésháza (1872), Nagymagyar (1892), and finally a deacon in Somorja. In 1906 he became the guardian canon of Bratislava. As a scholarly priest, he created a lot, mainly dealing with regional historical research. He left the medieval history of Somorja to posterity in a thick, scientifically thorough manuscript, but it has not yet been published. He died in 1926. He was buried in his father's grave in Szent. The inscription on the tombstone is relatively legible: Here rests in Christ István Kisfaludy, a folk teacher, + 1866 in the 56th year of his life, Zsigmond Kisfaludy, a canon of Bratislava, a historian, an enthusiastic countryman, born. 1837.VII.18 + 1926. VIII. 14. Let us pray for them! The inscription is abundant in personal data, but in the case of István Kisfaludy it seems to be incomplete. István may have been an active figure in the early Szent community as a cantor teacher. Ferenc Komlóssy wrote about him in his work on the church schools of the Archdiocese of Esztergom: “István Kisfaludy was an excellent singer and a teacher of rare diligence with an exemplary life ... he worked at this station (Szent) ... for 30 years (1836-66).” He certainly belonged to the leading intellectual class of the market town at the time, and as such he could have been, and was, a defining figure in his community during the 1848/1849 War of Independence and Civil Revolution. ; ;  ,
