József Király (Komárom, April 4, 1737 – Balatonfüred, June 17, 1825) was a Roman Catholic bishop in the city of Pécs, a patron of contemporary science and literature. ; His mother was Kata Jókay, and his brother, Sámuel Jókay, was the great-grandfather of Mór Jókai. He studied theology in Nagyszombat. He was a parish priest in Dunamoc in 1764, and then in Udvard in 1794. In 1805 he was appointed canon of Esztergom and rector of the seminary in Nagyszombat. He was a representative in the 1807 parliament, and in the same year, at the age of 71, he was elected bishop of Pécs, a title he held for almost two decades. He established numerous foundations, for example, on the anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, he established a 3,000 crown foundation, which was intended to ensure the conditions for a worthy celebration of the battle. He established a school scholarship for the education of Catholic youth and donated 10,000 forints to the institute for retired priests of the diocese. At the Synod of Bratislava, he was the chairman of the committee formed to improve the Káldy-translated Holy Scripture. Based on the decree of 1820, he prohibited further burials in the cathedral grounds, at which time the episcopal and chapter crypts were also created. Incidentally, the bishop did not feel so at home in the city of Pécs that he had the following written on the Bishop's Palace: "This is a lodging, not a house". He did not die at the foot of the Mecsek, but during a medical treatment in Balatonfüred, in 1825.
