Ferenc Kazinczy's memorial plaque
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
Built on medieval foundations – on the site of two earlier medieval houses – the two-storey inn – the Black Eagle – came into the possession of Ferenc Kazinczy’s father-in-law, Lajos Török, in the late 1700s, so it is no coincidence that Ferenc Kazinczy himself first lived here upon arriving in Košice. His memorial plaque was placed on the wall of the building by the Csemadok (Slovak Hungarian Social and Public Education Association) in 1994. The work, created by the Košice sculptor György Bartusz, bears the following inscription in Slovak and Hungarian: “The poet and linguist, Ferenc Kazinczy 1759 – 1831, lived and worked here.”
