1. Joseph and Mary went, they went,
One day late in the evening they arrived in Bethlehem,
They were tired, dusty and hungry,
No door opened anywhere, they knocked in vain.
2. They went into the city, they went from house to house,
–, Would any poor lodging be given to the anointed?
Mary was at the end of the ninth month,
Every day she waited for her son to be born.
3. Her trembling heart was sad, complaining,
–, What should we do, dear, said Joseph, his beautiful devotee
I wonder where and with whom we could get shelter,
Where could we hide, I could be at peace with you.
4. This man has a very nice house,
Let's try it, maybe he'll give us a place to stay for the night,
They humbly asked, the rich man answered:
Do you have many horses and money with him?
5. We have nothing but one ox and one good donkey,
Come, look at them and see for yourself,
–, I see who you are, but this is a gentleman's house,
There is no place for the poor here.
6. They went to another, still hoping,
They asked for a place to stay for the night for more money,
–, I will not give a place to a stranger,
He rudely said to them: –, Keep digging.
7. A man went there and scolded Joseph:
–, This poor creature, tell me, where are you carrying it?
Aren't you ashamed of yourself, you soulless peasant,
Because he can't take it anymore, even a blind man can see it.
8. I see an empty stable nearby,
Let's go there, dear, let's trust in God,
Mary didn't answer, she just nodded at him,
Her heart was sad, her hour was near.
9. That night, just around midnight,
She gave birth to her child in a poor straw bed.
What should she do with him, how should she cover him,
There is no fur on his clothes, what keeps him warm.
10. He took it and carefully placed it in the manger,
His little body rested on a little hay,
A piece of stone was the support for his head,
Thus Jesus was born – the savior of the world.
