The house of Arnold Ipolyi's parents

Arnold Ipolyi, a nationally renowned mythology researcher, art historian and high priest, was a descendant of the renowned Stummer family. For a long time, several of our encyclopedias referred to him as a distinguished native of Ipolykeszi. And although we already know that he was born not here in 1823, but in Disznós in Hont County – where his mother, Arzénia Szmrecsényi, was visiting her parents – this does not change anything about the relationship between the great scientist and the small village along the Ipoly. After all, Ipolyi spent his childhood here, his parents’ former mansion still stands in the village today, and since the end of the last century a commemorative plaque has been proclaiming [on the church wall] that “This is where Ipolyi grew up in the prime of his life”.
