Igloi Town Hall

Building, structure

After selling the medieval town hall (now the Provincial House), Igló had a new town hall built. The money from the sale (9,000 Hungarian gold) covered the construction of the current town hall, and the city also provided support. The construction cost a total of 11,569 gold and 51 fillér. The three-story building, built in the classicist style between 1777-1779, is located in the middle of the main square. ; Until the end of the 1950s, the town hall was the center of city life. The city's famous events took place in and around the building, and the most important decisions were made here. Meetings were held in front of the building, and the city leaders gave speeches from the balcony - this is why the building's familiar name, i.e. "the town house", has survived among the residents of Igló. ; The most important room of the town hall is the meeting hall (today's ceremonial hall), which is located in the middle of the building and extends over two floors. The walls are decorated with restored Venetian mirrors, and on the outside with other decorations. The lower part of the decoration is a huge balcony with a conical balustrade railing, supported by decorative stone pillars. ; Nowadays, the hall is the scene of various celebrations, such as weddings, greetings of newborns and jubilant pensioners, and receiving special guests. ; In the basement of the renovated town hall there are banquet and conference rooms (formerly a prison and a fuel depot), and on the ground floor, first and second floors there are offices for city officials. ; On the ground floor of the town hall we can see the symbols of the city - the coat of arms, flag, seal, badges, the key to the city and its first written record (29.11.1268.). Here you can find a list of the city's mayors and mayors, the coats of arms of the twin cities, and the city's patron saint - the renovated statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary (1724), which was part of the nearby Marian Column, has been located here since 2010.
