Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in Igló

Building, structure

The church is located in the city center between the terraced houses of Lőcsei Street, to which the Lőcsei Gate of the Provincial House leads from the square. The church was probably built in the 14th century, originally used as a chapel next to the city hospital. It served mostly the Slovak-speaking population, so it is also called the Slovak church in the vernacular. ; The church's furnishings are in Baroque style, its main altar dates from 1751-1752, but the altarpiece was only made in 1856. Unfortunately, the original Baroque side altars have not survived, the new ones were made by the master carver Gyula Fuhrmann from Igló between 1884-1886. The paintings on the Baroque pulpit from 1756 were replaced with reliefs that were carved in the workshop of Ferenc Repcsik from Igló at the beginning of the 20th century - smaller parts of the church's furnishings were also made there.
