Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Igló

The church was built in 1380 in Gothic style on the site of an earlier 13th century church, and its gate is particularly beautiful. It had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1435 and an earthquake in 1441. It was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1742 and 1772. Its tower was bombed in 1849, so it had to be rebuilt in the 1870s, the plans for which were made by Imre Steindl. With a height of 87 m, the tower became the highest church tower in the Highlands. At the corners of the building there are 3.25 m high statues depicting the four evangelists. There are seven clock faces on the four sides of the tower, which are driven by a machine − 4 in the upper part, 3 a little lower. The clock faces have survived from the original Gothic tower, which was rebuilt in 1649. The people of Spišské Příž have been nicknamed the “blind” because of the many clocks on the tower. ; The nave of the church has a four-part cross vault, the capitals are decorated with carved leaves and animal figures. The pillars are polychrome coated. The arches of the vault are filled with symbolic figures of the evangelists, surrounded by the sun, moon and stars. The star vault of the sanctuary was made during the reconstruction in 1771, in a more or less Baroque style. ; The ribbed vault of the St. Barbara Chapel, added to the north, was made in 1395 and is Gothic in nature. One of the most valuable monuments of the church is the Gothic lintel gate on the south side, in the tympanum of which there is a relief depicting the coronation of the Virgin Mary. In addition, the carved sculpture group of Mettercia on the St. Anne altar deserves attention, as well as the bronze baptismal font.
