Hybbei All Saints' Church
Building, structure
The first written mention of the village of Hybbe, located east of Liptóújvár, dates back to 1239. In the 13th century, German settlers made the village flourish, which was elevated to city status in 1265, and from 1390 it was part of the Liptóújvár estate. ; The village's Roman Catholic parish church was built around 1300 and underwent several reconstructions in the following centuries, so it also bears the marks of Gothic, Baroque and Classicist architecture. In the 16th century, the church was surrounded by a fortress wall. Bálint Balassi, the greatest master of Hungarian-language Renaissance poetry, rests in the crypt of the church. Balassi was born in 1554 in the castle of Zólyom, and spent his childhood and part of his youth in Liptóújvár, near Hybbe. During the war of liberation against the Turks, he was wounded and died during the siege of Esztergom in May 1594. His remains are under the sanctuary of the Hibbe church, in an unknown location.
