Heroic monument on the Vagan

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

; ; The Heroic Monument and National Flag, inaugurated on October 1, 1939, was inaugurated by Dr. Pál Cselényi, Member of Parliament, co-chairman of the Monument and National Flag Grand Committee. In his celebratory speech, he emphasized, "This inaugurated National Flag not only declares war on small-mindedness and cowardice, but also declares war on that eternally alarming, terrifying and goose-bumpy new defeatism, which in today's historical times wants to weaken the nation's self-confidence, challenge its optimism and cast doubt on its one and eternal vocation, in the Carpathian Basin". ; Guests attending the inauguration ceremony of the Heroes' Memorial and National Flag: Dr. Pál Cselényi (Member of Parliament and Chief Government Advisor), Vilmos Jaross (Chief Steward), Baron József Majthényi (Vice-Governor), Dr. Sándor Balogh (on behalf of the frontline soldiers), Dr. Károly Szabó (Chief Registrar), János Hunyad-Hulák (Kispest innkeeper and chief organizer of the National Flag collection), József Lengyelfalussy (Galánta parish priest), Ferenc Apponyi and Teréz Apponyi (guests from Budapest). ; From Vágá, 77 people lost their lives for the Hungarian homeland in World War I. The village surrendered to the Czech military at the end of January 1919, when it had been surrounded for days. After the units of the Hungarian Soviet Republic recaptured Érsekújvár on June 3, 1919, the units of the Hungarian Soviet Republic were stationed in the village the next day. The occupying Czech military fired into the protesting Hungarian crowd, which, in addition to numerous wounded, also had several fatalities. ; At the Heroes' Memorial, the turul was broken up by Czech soldiers at the time of the change of empire, and what remained of it was "buried by good people for posterity". The Czech soldiers who occupied the village of Mátyusföld also removed the inscription I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD I BELIEVE IN ONE COUNTRY from the monument. The allegorical female figure (Hungaria statue) on top of the monument was hidden in the church during the years of socialism, waiting for better days to come. ; After the change of regime, in 1992, the village began collecting signatures for the renovation of the Heroes' Memorial. With 811 signatures, the residents declared the renovation and expansion of the Heroes' Memorial, with a marble plaque containing the names of the victims of World War II, since 43 Vága residents lost their lives in World War II for the Hungarian homeland. The original turul was excavated in 1993, a copy was made of it, and it was inaugurated again. The Hungaria statue also took its rightful place on the monument on August 22, 1993. ; The turul was destroyed by vandals in the late 1990s. ; For more than 20 years, the monument stood without a turul bird. In 2015, the village renovated the monument with a mixed fate. The renovated female figure now holds the flagpole in its original colors with its right hand, on which the National Flag once waved in the wind, and with its left hand holds a shield shaped like a knight's badge. The new turul was placed at the foot of the Hungária statue. The renovated Heroes' Monument in Vága was ready for Village Day on August 8, 2015. ; In Vága, after two decades, the mythical bird of Hungarian identity once again proclaims historical continuity, the Hungarian past and the Hungarian future. ; On September 17, 2015, the message BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, BELIEVE IN ONE HOMELAND was again placed on the Heroes' Monument. ; The Vága National Flag has been waiting for decades for the moment (Vága was annexed to Czechoslovakia on January 20, 1945) when it could finally be returned to its original place. This unforgettable moment - even if only for three hours - took place on the 100th anniversary of Trianon, on the National Unity Day, also held in the village. ; ; https://youtu.be/GJ840Jv5FL8 ; Vága, June 4, 2020, the short video was made by: Róbert Farkas ; ;
