Holocaust Memorial in Rožňany

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

The fact that a worthy memorial was inaugurated in Rožňany in 2005 was largely due to the efforts of two survivors – Tibor Ehrenfeld, who still lives in Rožňany, and Sándor Strausz, who left the city in 1968, and local historian László Kardos. The following lines can be read on the monument symbolizing the Torah, erected in the city's public cemetery: "In memory of the Jewish citizens of the city of Rožňany, of whom more than 400 were murdered by the fascist regime in 1944, and of those whose final resting places were liquidated by the then regime in the 1970s. This memorial was created in 2005 at the initiative and donations of the grieving survivors, and in cooperation with the Rožňany City Government." ; Wreath-laying on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27)
