Mihály Hlavacsek was born on July 17, 1803 in Szakolca. After graduating from the Lutheran Lyceum, he studied law at the Royal Academy in Bratislava, theology in Halle, and mathematics and physics in Göttingen. He taught in Debrecen, Levoča and Prešov, where he was the rector of the Lutheran college between 1854 and 1874. Already in Bratislava, during his lyceum studies, he became the president of the Slovak Language and Literature Society. He also organized this society in Levoča at the lyceum. He also supported the literary activities of the students, and their works were read out at the Society's meetings. The best writings were published in the "Liber memorialis", and from these the almanac Jitřenka (Gitřenka) was created in 1840. He maintained contact with people of Slovak nationality and supported the library of the Levoča Society. He also organized the Slovak Society in Prešov. He also taught in Slovak. As a teacher, he attracted the so-called Stura people to Levoča, and under his influence progressive Slovak literary romanticism developed. Because of his activity in this direction, he was called the Slovak singer, even when his nationalist activity decreased in the last years of his life.
