János Hetényi, a Reformed pastor, theologian, philosopher, and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, was born in the village of Ekel in 1786. The "Scientist János Hetényi Days" have been held annually in the village since 1997. In 2003, the elementary school was also named after the famous native of the village. The statue of János Hetényi stands in the courtyard of the elementary school, erected on November 4, 2005. It is the work of sculptor András Csütörtöky (Csütörtöky).
