Belfry
The Zsitvatő belfry in the village of Žitavce (Hungarian: Zsitvatő) is one of the old religious and cultural monuments of the village. The belfries played an important role in the villages: they not only signaled religious events, but also warned the population in case of danger - for example, during a fire or attack.
Historical background
The history of the village is very old: the area was inhabited in prehistoric times, and the village was mentioned in written sources as early as 1075. In the Middle Ages, the area was owned by various noble families and church estates. In the 17th century, a fortress also stood near the village as part of the defense against the Turkish threat.
