He died in Dunaszerdahely and is buried in Garamkövesd. In his honor, the Dunaszerdahely Regional Committee of the Csemads established the Gyurcsó István Public Culture Award in 1997 (for his activities in Hungarian public culture in Slovakia), and then the National Presidency of the Csemads in 2013. In his memory, the Garamkövesd municipality organizes the Gyurcsó István Memorial Day and the Gyurcsó István Essay Contest (since 1995, annually), and also erected a bust of him. The Gyurcsó István Scholarship, established by the Dunaszerdahely Regional Committee of the Csemads and the Gyurcsó István Foundation, has been awarded continuously since 1995. The Gyurcsó István Foundation in Dunaszerdahely, which also supports Hungarian publications in Slovakia, took his name (since 1992), and gradually the foundation's legal successors (since 2013 the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Slovakia).
