The grave of Kornél Görgey in Toporc

Kornél Görgey of Görgői and Toporczi, Levoča, 1819. Dec. 17. (district 26.) János G. landowner, cs. kir. hussar major and Johanna Bosnyák son, cousin of Artúr G. honv. general. Hungarian, evangelical. Graduated from high school. 1836 - corporal, 1837 - lieutenant, 1842 - first lieutenant, 1848. Jul. 8 - lieutenant in the 9th Miklós hussar regiment. Unmarried. (1850 - wife Emília Hornbostel, died Levoča, 1910.) ; In July he was ordered to guard the Drava line with his regiment. From mid-September he participated in the battles against Jellačić. Oct. 16 (16.) - company captain sided with his regiment in the War of Independence. Nov. 25 (Dec. 1) - major and brigadier in the Upper Danube army. Dec. 28. His brigade is surprised by the imperial troops at Bábolna, and suffers significant losses. As a result, on Jan. 5, 1849, he is relieved of his position and becomes a division commander in his old regiment. He serves in this capacity during the winter and spring campaigns. Apr. 12. he is ordered to the headquarters of the Upper Danube army. Apr. 14. for his bravery in the Battle of Hatvan (Apr. 2). In May, he is transferred to the Auxiliary Cavalry Subdivision of the Ministry of War. Later, he is its chief, in this position from Jul. 24 (Aug. 1) - lieutenant colonel, until the surrender of the army in Világos. ; Due to the illness of the imperial troops, he is only court-martialed in the summer of 1850. He was stripped of his former rank, but released (Pest, Oct. 19, 1850). He farmed on his estate in Toporc until the compromise. In 1869 he was reactivated as a lieutenant colonel in the Hungarian Royal Army. In 1871 he became a colonel, in 1878 a major general, military field commander of Szeged, and finally a lieutenant general (1883). In 1888 he was retired, and at the same time he was appointed a member of the House of the Grand Order. He was a member of the Szepes County Military Association. † Budapest, Dec. 26, 1897; ; Kornél Görgey's body was laid to rest in the Toporc cemetery, in the fenced-in grave garden reserved for the Görgey family. His wife, Emília Hornbostel, born in Gumpendorf (a district of Vienna), rests in the adjacent grave.
