Statue of Georg Raphael Donner

In the list of Bratislava statues, G. Schwianter is named as the creator and Hegedus, Kulcsár and Caissera as co-authors. ; On the left side of the stairs leading from the small square to the St. Martin's Cathedral stands the bust of the sculptor Georg Raphael Donner (1693-1741). "Behind the small, neo-baroque wrought-iron fence (the fence originally surrounded the statue of Maria Theresa, which was destroyed by Czechoslovak legionaries on October 27, 1921), the simple, columnar bust on a pedestal depicts Donner looking to the right as a young adult, in a loose coat, and bareheaded." The inscription under the bust reads: 1693 G.R. DONNER 1893. From these two dates it follows that the bust was made for the 200th anniversary of his birth. ; Georg Raphael Donner (1693-1741) was in the service of Prince-Primate Imre Esterházy of Esztergom in Bratislava for 10 years from 1928 and worked for the courts of Hungarian nobles. “In 1734 he concluded a contract with the archdiocese for the lease of the marble quarry in Süttő.” ; His most significant work is the main altar of St. Martin in the Bratislava Cathedral, of which only the statue of St. Martin and the beggar can be seen in the cathedral, which stands a few meters from the bust. ; “An outstanding figure in European sculpture and classicizing late Baroque art, Georg Raphael Donner (Eßling/Vienna XXII. district, baptized May 25, 1693-Vienna, February 15, 1741) influenced Hungarian sculpture for several generations.” ; Kornél Divald: the Bratislava sculpture crisis. from the writings of: Donner Rafael, "who was born in Vienna, studied abroad, but whom we can claim as our own with at least as much right as those Hungarian artists who were separated from their homeland at an early age and worked abroad..."
