Cemeteries, tombstones, grave sites

Sámuel Genersich (1768–1844) – physician, botanist Born on February 15, 1768 in Késmárk, the son of Keresztély Genersich, a merchant, and Zsuzsanna Rojkó. Like his two older brothers, who later also entered a scientific career, he first graduated from the Evangelical Lyceum in Késmárk, then went to study in Vienna. Here he received his medical degree in 1791. He began his medical practice in his hometown, later moving to Levoca. He married Johanna Fabriczy, and they had 5 children. He had been interested in botany since he was young, and had a large plant collection. The Provincial Council issued a call for botanists to collect plants found in their area and send them to Buda, indicating the exact location. The collection work, which lasted several years, served as the basis for his main work, the List of the Spišské Flora. In the Latin booklet, he lists 950 plants. A few years later, he published an 8-page supplement to his earlier work, in which he described 588 plants. He was the first in Hungary to apply Linnaeus' system. He was unable to finish his third botanical work, which survived in manuscript. He discovered several new plants, and 2 plants were named after him (Draba Genersichii, Centaurea Genersichii). In addition to his botanical work, he also published a work on veterinary medicine, with which he intended to help prevent the spread of rinderpest, which was very dangerous at the time. In 1806, he was elected an honorary member of the Regensburg Botanical Society, and in 1830 he received a similar honor from the Pest Medical Faculty. He died on September 2, 1844 in Levoča. ; After years of searching, the grave of Sámuel Genersich was found by his descendants in the Levoča cemetery. The tombstone, made of sandstone in 1871, was removed from the ground at the last minute in the spring of 2010. The tombstone was preserved in a restoration workshop in Budapest and then placed in the Levoča Evangelical Church. The tombstone was replaced by a granite copy of the original tombstone in 2010. ; ; His main works: ; - Genersich Sámuel: Florae Scepusiensis Elenchus, seu Enumeratio plantarum in Comitatu Hungariae Scepusiensi, eumque percurrentibus montibus Carpathicis sponte crescentium. Levoča, 1798. ; - Genersich Sámuel: Catalogus plantarum rariorum Scepusii, anno 1801 in autumno, in usum amicorum suorum conscriptus. Freistadt Leutschau in Hinsicht der hier sich geäusserten und der in der umliegenden Gegend von allen Seiten sich äussernden Rindviehseuche. Lőcse, 1829.
