Imre Gáspár's memorial plaque

Imre Gáspár (Nagycsalomja, 24 Feb. 1854 – Bp., 19 Aug. 1910): journalist, poet, translator. He settled in Pest in 1872. In the first half of his career, he belonged to the literary opposition led by Pál Gyulai against official literature, attacking the aristocracy, the clergy, the gentry lifestyle and the morality of capitalist society. He was one of the first domestic commentators and translators of Slovak poetry, and was the first to introduce international workers' poetry. At the end of his life, he put his pen to the service of the government and clericalism. In his last years, he worked in the prime minister's press office.
