Building, structure

The original church dates back to 1513, but after the Turkish occupation of the city in 1554, it was converted into a mosque that same year, and it continued to serve this function even after the castle was recaptured in 1593. In 1682, forces led by Imre Thököly besieged and occupied Fülek with significant Turkish help, which was practically completely destroyed along with the current church building. It was rebuilt in Baroque style between 1694 and 1727 with the support of the regional judge István Koháry. Above the western arched gate of the church, it is read: "It was built for the glory of God by Count István Koháry 1725". Its tower was unusually added to the northeast side. ; The church has a single nave, the eastern sanctuary is polygonal, covered with a barrel vault, decorated with stuccoes and paintings, one of which depicts King St. Stephen. The vaulting system of the nave rests on a row of columns with combined pilasters. ; The Baroque main altarpiece from the early 18th century depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The two side altars were built at the end of the century, but the side altar in the second half of the 17th century. The church features a medieval painting of Saint Bonaventure, whose Latin inscription states that he was the general superior and minister general of the Franciscan Order in 1257. ; The monastery building is connected to the church. It is a two-story building with cross aisles and a rectangular courtyard. Both the church and the monastery have been declared monuments.
