National flag with relics

The National Flag Committee established in Hungary in 1925 set the goal of erecting National Flags throughout Hungary, evoking the historical country and symbolizing the unity of the nation. ; The monument was erected in Dunaszerdahely on the occasion of the first anniversary of the reunification on November 12, 1939, at the site of the former Zipszer Lake (today's Szent István Square). A crowd of several thousand people showed up for the inauguration. The delegation bringing the flag was received by the city's leadership at the railway station, and then they marched to the bastion-like monument (higher than a man's height) prepared in the square next to Horthy Miklós Street (part of today's Fő Street). ; The inauguration was attended by Chief Nándor Nagy and the dignitaries of the city and the surrounding area. On behalf of the National Flag Committee, Dr. Lajos Liptay gave the opening speech, followed by József Sverteczky, director of the state police, and László Turcsányi, member of parliament. On behalf of Dunaszerdahely, Dr. Géza Szeiff, chairman of the local national flag committee, and judge Béla Srenker spoke – after which, with a military salute, the Hungarian flag was raised on the monument. Later, several more speeches, recitations and patriotic songs were also performed. As part of the celebration, the city leadership placed the commemorative document on the event on the pedestal of the national flag. ; Between 1939 and 1945, Dunaszerdahely's most notable commemorations took place in front of the national flag (even the celebration of March 15, 1945 was held here). ; After World War II, the bastion was damaged and later demolished by Czech soldiers. In its place, a smaller socialist monument was erected in 1954, which was dismantled in 1971 and the work of János Nagy entitled Martyr's Monument was placed there.
