Memorial bench in Garamkövesden
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
After a quarter of a century, a bench was added next to the statue, where his personal acquaintances, grandchildren who returned home to their grandparents, can sit and reflect on the past, present and future. From the bench, they can see the steep bank of the Burda, where the poet often sat at dusk, strumming his banjo or lost in thought. Ágnes Keszeg, the organizer of local cultural life, remembers the beginnings. She says that the Gyurcsó István Memorial Day was initiated by Doctor János Varga, the Stugel, Drapák and Keszegh families. Together with the local government, the plan to erect a statue of the beloved poet was successfully implemented. In 1994, for the first memorial day, a work by sculptor János Nagy was completed. From the following year, the event was expanded with a voting competition. ; The idea for the bench next to the statue was also created by Ágnes Keszegh. The wrought iron bench was made by their resident, Tibor Rajcsó, and bears the initials of Judit Szliva, Pál Keszegh and László Huszár, who did the most to make the Gyurcsó Days happen and keep them alive.
