The grave of World War I hero Miklós Egyed

Cemeteries, tombstones, grave sites

The following report was published in the issue of the Rozsnyói Híradó on November 21, 1915: ; ; "He died for the homeland ... ; - Funeral of Miklós Egyed - ; ; He was a young man with a poetic inclination. All fire, all flame. His soul was full of the image of the homeland and he was happy that the homeland called him. He dreamed of a battle cry, like Petőfi, for whom he was enthusiastic as befits a Hungarian youth. He went into battle with good will, because he knew that his place was there. He was also one of the legendary Hungarian heroes: determined, brave, forward-looking. He only looked out for the enemy, not for himself. What is his life compared to Hungarian glory, the great past and even greater future of the homeland? ... ; He fell there on the battlefield, when galloping horses were galloping to victory. The Russian bullet pierced his forehead. On May 27, 1915, near Kalnikov, in Galicia, his weapon fell from his hand. Still He was 20 years old, full of hope, ambition, and promising writing talent, as one of his most popular poems published in this issue shows. ; The fate of heroes was his lot: he fell for his country and was given a sacred resting place under a foreign tomb, which comradeship had chosen for him - in the flowerbed of a count's castle. What beautiful things could his poetic heart have dreamed of there under the flowers? Oh, how cold the earth seemed to him when he learned how foreign his country was to the earth, that the stars of a non-Hungarian sky were watching over his dreams? ... ; And the deep love of his parents and brothers found a way to ensure that our hero's dream would be undisturbed. They brought him here to the sweet homeland. Here too there will be flowers over his grave, but these will be planted by a brotherly hand, cared for by a father's eye, and soaked in the tears of a sweet mother, they will become more beautiful and refreshing. Whoever gave his life for the salvation of his country, this he deserved the reward. ; The body of Miklós Egyed, a volunteer from the 16th Home Guard Regiment, who was a candidate for a military rank, was exhumed in Galicia with the permission of the military authorities and transported to Rozsnyó on the 19th of this month and was taken to its last journey, to the local cemetery. The coffin of the young hero was laid to rest in the Catholic church, covered with wreaths from his parents, siblings, relatives, former teachers, fellow students and admirers of the Egyed family. ; A funeral service was held at 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon, at which the entire city's public, representatives of offices, bodies and a huge mourning congregation were present. The funeral service began with the classical funeral march played on the organ by Kálmán Fodor. Then, after the touching singing of the Catholic high school choir, the chief deacon Gyula Terray spoke in front of the altar a speech and prayer appropriate to the occasion, beautiful, poignant, sometimes imbued with patriotic fire. After the blessing of the coffin, the female and mixed choir sang a beautiful funeral song in a captivating voice. The coffin was placed on the hearse by the vacationing soldiers who had gathered there, accompanied by the sounds of the organ. ; In the cemetery, the students again sang a farewell carol beautifully. Then, pastor István Smid said a prayer with poetic wings and captivating content. Finally, Emil Szkalos, the headmaster of the high school, said a short but formal, classically related farewell on behalf of the teaching staff and youth of the high school. ; Miklós Egyed now rests there in the bosom of his native land. He died for his homeland: he did not live in vain..."
