The symbolic grave of theological professor Dr. Antal Ürge

Cemeteries, tombstones, graves

Antal Ürge was born in Galánta in the Hungarian Highlands in 1904. He was ordained a priest in 1930. After years as a chaplain and sanatorium minister, he became a bishop's secretary between 1934 and 1936, then a catechism teacher in Zsámbék, and later prefect of the St. Imre College in Budapest. From 1943 he was a theology teacher in Székesfehérvár, and from 1952 he was the director of the seminary church there until his forced escape in December 1956. Father Antal Ürge was the first pastor and martyr of the Hungarians in Manchester in 1956. During his short but all the more active ministry in northern England, he visited the refugee camps, celebrated mass, heard confessions, preached, and most of all, consoled and encouraged everyone. The hard work and mental hardships consumed his health: he died tragically suddenly on February 4, 1957. He was laid to rest in Wilmslow Cemetery.
