The work and grave of Dr. Dénes Gürtler, dean

Dr. Dénes Antal Gürtler; born on May 22, 1881 in Zselíz. He completed his schooling in Körmöcbánya, Rozsnyó, and his theological studies in the seminary in Esztergom. He completed his further university studies in Budapest. He was ordained a priest on June 25, 1904. In the meantime, he also obtained a doctorate in canon law. He was a chaplain in Dorogon, then a catechist in Budapest, in 1907 a chaplain in Garamszentbenedek, in 1910 an administrator in Hont County. After Trianon, he remained in Czechoslovakia. In 1924, he was elected dean of the Drégelypalánk district. From 1936, he was a representative of the Czechoslovak National Assembly. In 1938, he took over the parish of Barti. Between 1938 and 1944, he was a member of the Hungarian Parliament, and in 1942, he was appointed as a district dean. He was awarded the Order of the Knight's Cross and the Cross of the Protection of the Country. Due to his busy schedule and illness, he could not fully carry out his pastoral activities, so from October 16, 1944, Chaplain Alajos Tóth assisted him in his pastoral duties. This important personality, who did so much for the lives of Hungarian believers, Dr. Dénes Gürtler poisoned himself on December 31, 1944, at the age of 63, out of fear of the Russians, as he was a member of the Hungarian Parliament. He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Barti.
