Dominican church and monastery
Building, structure
The oldest church in Košice. The eastern church was built in the 13th century, with a convent attached to it on the north side. The buildings, which had fallen into disrepair by then, were rebuilt in Gothic style in 1437. During the Reformation, in 1553, fanatical Protestant townspeople raided, robbed and destroyed the monastery. After that, the Dominicans left Košice. The building only lay in ruins for a century and a half, and was hit by several fires. The Dominican monks were only able to return in 1699 and by 1767 the building was restored, now in Baroque style. Due to its proximity to the city wall, it was damaged and burned down in several sieges. It received its current form in 1894. ; Monument research has revealed numerous medieval elements in the building. On the south side, the former medieval entrance (walled in) and the western gate can be seen in their original state. The monastery also has medieval elements (guardian stones).
