The memorial was unveiled in 1996, on the occasion of the first meeting of the deported and resettled population of Nagymegyer. During the period of statelessness, between 1945-48, 539 people (including 83 children) were deported to the Czech Republic and 205 families were resettled in Hungary. The destinations included Mezőmegyer (16 families), Gerendás (13 families), Elek (8 families), Csorvás (3 families), Mezőberény (6 families), Magócs (2 families), Újkígyós (1 family), Békéscsaba (16 families), Körösladány (1 family), Drávaszabolcs (1 family), Németpalkonya (1 family). The town's Catholic parish priest István Cseri was also among the deportees.
