Bust of Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry from Igloo

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry worked in the local pharmacy (1879-80). It was here that he received the “extraterrestrial inspiration” that led to his becoming a painting genius. His bust was unveiled on March 29, 1994, in the Szepesi Artists’ Gallery on Tél-utca. At that time, the Slovak nationalist press launched an anti-Hungarian, hysterical fireworks display against the world-famous master. ; The 50-centimeter-high bronze bust is a partial copy of the Csontváry statue created by the sculptor Jenő Kerényi and placed in the Kerepesi Cemetery in Budapest in 1953. A copy of this statue can also be seen in Pécs opposite the Csontváry Museum, founded in 1973 and erected in 1979.
