Bishop István Cseri was the Roman Catholic parish priest of Nagymegyer between 1944 and 1948. In 1947, he visited the Hungarian families of Nagymegyer who had been deported to Czechoslovakia to offer them spiritual comfort. The authorities retaliated against all of this in 1948 and as punishment, he was deported to Hungary on October 19, 1948. He went to Budapest, where he became the parish priest of Christ the King Church. He maintained constant contact with his followers who had remained at home and had settled in Hungary. After the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence in 1956, he was arrested. He was held in pretrial detention for months. This took a toll on his health, and he died in 1959, at the age of 56. He is buried in the Rákoskeresztúr Cemetery in Budapest. On April 13, 2008, a memorial plaque was erected in his memory on the outer wall of the St. Nicholas Church by the Kolping Society of Nagymegyer, the Roman Catholic Parish of Nagymegyer and the Csemadok Municipal Organization. Every year on Good Shepherd Sunday, after the mass, representatives of the organizations lay a wreath on this memorial plaque.
