János Bottyán, commonly known as Vak Bottyán (Esztergom, 1643 ? – Tarnaörs camp, September 26 or 27, 1709) was a Hungarian soldier, national hero, Kuruc general, and legendary commander of the Rákóczi War of Independence. ; The Kuruc era greeted Újvár in 1704. On November 16, 1704, the castle was taken over from the Labanc without a fight, and János Bottyán became the commander of the castle. ; The memorial plaque of János Bottyán was inaugurated on June 17, 1906, during a ceremony held on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Rákóczi War of Independence, together with the statues of Lajos Kossuth and Gergely Czuczor, and the memorial plaques of Ferenc Rákóczi and Miklós Bercsényi. The memorial plaque was placed on the wall of the Népbank building. Later, the building was destroyed along with the memorial plaque.

Here stood the castle of JÁNOS BOTTYÁN / the famous valiant / general Kurucz / which he received from Prince RÁKÓCZI / as a reward for the capture of ÉRSEKÚJVÁRN / in 1704. /Out of respect for the great hero / he marked the / ÉRSEKÚJVÁRI NÉPBANK R.T. / in 1904.
