Blanarovits Tomb

Cemeteries, tombstones, graves

There are at least two dozen tombstones in the St. Andrew's Cemetery that were made by Alajos Rigele. In addition to the fact that almost all of them are excellent sculptural works, most of them are also of historical significance, as Rigele also placed a portrait relief of the deceased on most of the tombstones. The exception is the tombstone erected for the Blanarovits family, which is decorated with the statue of the Sorrowful Mother. Marie Blanarovits was first buried in the tomb in 1916, but according to the database of the Slovak Monuments Office, the tombstone was only erected in 1931 after the death of Franz Blanarovits in 1930. It is likely that Marie and Franz Blanarovits were relatives of the Bratislava painter and graphic artist József Blanarovits / Jozef Blanarovits (1889 - 1966), perhaps his parents. It is also possible that the tomb was commissioned by him. Both Blanarovits and Rigele were members of the Bratislava Fine Arts Association (Pressburger Kunstverein) which operated between 1884 and 1945. The tomb is located in sector III/3.
