József Bereck was born on March 9, 1945 in the village of Albár in the Dunaszerdahely district. He completed his secondary education at the Hungarian-language grammar school in Dunaszerdahely. He graduated in 1963, then studied at the Pedagogical College in Nitra until 1966. In 1971, he joined the district and then regional weekly newspaper Csallóköz – Žitný ostrov, where he remained. From 1973, he worked as the editor-in-chief and then as the managing editor of the newspaper. ; His literary work is significant, in 1974 and 1994 he was awarded the Slovak Literary Fund's standard award, and in 1998 he received the Madách Award for his 1997 volume, A galambszelídítő.
