Belházy House
Building, structure
This most impressive Renaissance building in Selmecbánya was built in 1616 by the miner Eggstein Zsigmond von Ehrenegg. It was formed by connecting several buildings, so that the loggia that usually decorates the courtyard was placed on the street side. Its closed corner balcony was raised on a screw column and two guardian stones depicting human faces. It was expanded with its second floor later, at the end of the 17th century, and then with a wall in the Baroque period. ; The Belházy house can be found on Honvéd Street, which runs along a steep slope. It was named after a late Selmecbánya judge, Belházy. It is also a notable building for the Academy, as it was purchased in 1770 after the appointment of Giovanni Antonio Scopoli (János Antal Scopoli). He taught chemical and metallurgical subjects here, and even had his apartment here. In 1811, the idea arose to buy the neighboring city hospital and merge the two into one building. We know that this did not happen, but education continued here until 1900. In fact, the house remained a teacher's residence even after that. The last person to live in it was Róbert Schelle, a chemistry teacher.
