The grave of the Reformed pastor Pál Batta

Cemeteries, tombstones, graves

Pál Batta, a reformed priest from the Uplands, was born in 1910 in Felden (now Jesenské) in Gömör County. He received his ministerial degree in Debrecen, as he was one of the outstanding students in theology there, so the Hungarian state sent him - together with two other companions - to Edinburgh, Scotland, to complete his final year there. There he met his future wife, who was his support until his death. ; He began his priestly career in the picturesque Szádelő - a village in eastern Slovakia between Košice and Rožňov, located in one of the most beautiful landscape protection areas in Slovakia. Pál Batta survived the war here and - upon invitation - came to Királyhelmec, where he served until his death in 1969. In addition to his memorable services, he supervised the repair work of the church tower in 1949, and in 1969 he also started the repainting of the interior and exterior of the building, but he could no longer see his beautified church, because in the same year, he died unexpectedly and early. ; His marriage was childless, perhaps also because during the communist times he was subject to continuous, unjustified harassment because of his Scottish wife. The primitive power considered his spouse to be a capitalist agent... However, it was a beautiful event in Pál Batta's life, and at the same time a recognition of his excellent pastoral work, that when the Australian Bishop Pradervand, president of the Protestant World Federation, visited Czechoslovakia in the sixties (I do not know the exact date), he guided him through the towns of the Highlands and translated his speeches from English into Hungarian.
