László Basternák is the most significant politician in Ógyalla, who also served as mayor between 2003 and 2006. Before that, he worked in the representative body, as the chairman of the Finance Committee. Among his achievements are the establishment of the Ógyalla-Bagota industrial park, the construction of a 16-apartment residential block, the expansion of the sewer network, the elevation of the Ógyalla Cultural Days to city status, the recognition of young talents – several of whom have since worked as doctors –, the Jókai statue, the creation of wooden welcome signs in Ógyalla and Bagota, and he was also active in the external renovation of the Catholic church. During his mayoralty, the rationalization and reorganization of the city units also took place. His memory is preserved by the Basternák László Civic Association (Sports Day, Advent Day).
