Statue of Béla Bartók

The statue was erected in the town's main square in 1992, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Bárdos Lajos Mixed Choir. It was created by György Lipcsey, a sculptor from Dunaszerdahely. The initiator of the creation of the statue was the Nagymegyer Organization of the Csemadok, in memory of the fact that Béla Bartók visited Nagymegyer twice in 1910. The first time was at the end of March 1910, during the Easter holidays, when he became acquainted with the folk music tradition of Nagymegyer. He was assisted in his work by the Reformed pastor Sándor Fekets. The second time, at the beginning of November 1910, he consciously came to Nagymegyer, searching for the opportunities he had experienced for the first time, in this case with a phonograph. Bartók chose well when he came to Nagymegyer. He collected 94 melodies in the settlement, most of which he recorded on a phonograph. The majority of the folk songs with lyrics, 18 melodies, were published in 1924 in the collection of examples of his book "A magyar népdal". The statue was unveiled in a ceremonial setting on 24 October 1992 by Béla Bartók's son. After the statue was erected, the main square of the city was named after Béla Bartók. This honorary name was also adopted by the Hungarian-language primary school in Nagymegyer on 15 March 2000.
