Former Chamber of Mining building

Building, structure

The mineral resources that could be extracted in the area played a key role in both the founding of the town and its medieval rise. As can be seen in many other mining towns in the Highlands (e.g. Selmec), the mine shafts run directly under the settlement. A system of cellars and mine shafts, which is now difficult to detect, runs under the main square of Rozsnyó. There was once an exit to this from the cellars of several medieval houses, such as the town hall and the former Chamber of Mines building. ; The walls of the "L"-shaped, one-story, saddle-roofed, 17th-century corner house built in the Renaissance style are strengthened by a series of characteristic, very massive pillars. There are extensive cellars under the building, connected by underground corridors to the shafts and tunnels under the former Main Square. ; II. Ferenc Rákóczi demonstrably lived here from November 26, 1706 to February 5, 1707, and managed the country's affairs from here. The unusually cold winter of that time, which also thwarted the national assembly announced in Rozsnyó, caught him here. Rákóczi addressed his diplomatic correspondence to numerous foreign rulers from here, distributed his military orders from here, and met with delegates from the nearby counties here. Although there is no physical evidence and other sources do not confirm it, legend has it that his mint also operated here, in the basement of the mining chamber. The copper libertás, the money of the War of Independence, were minted here. ; The mass of the building is still the original today, but the appearance of the facades was partially changed by the 19th-20th century renovations and replacement of windows and doors. Today, shops operate on the ground floor.
