St. Anna Roman Catholic Church in Bagota

Building, structure

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Anna is the only church in the settlement of Bagota (an independent village before 1971, since then a part of the city of Ógyalla). The male members of the Ordódy family were the guardians of the church until 1945. It was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style and later transformed in the Classicist style. On the tower above the entrance to the church there is a red limestone plaque with the following inscription: D.O.M. IN HONOREM S.ANNAE A.1735 E FUNDAMENTIS EREXIT A.1811 RENOVAVIT. FAMILIA ORDÓDY ; The church stands in the center of the settlement, behind it lies the Bagota cemetery. ; "The old church was probably built before 1563, which later became the property of the Protestants, and in 1719 it was returned to the Catholics. This one may have been made of wickerwork, and then the Ordódy family built another one of more solid material. According to István Nagyfalussy, the church of the settlement is "a small family chapel built in 1711 in memory of the fact that two Ordódy boys, who were thought to be lost in the Turkish battles, returned home after 15 years" (Nagyfalussy 1941, 2). According to a manuscript that has survived to us, from the private archive of József Chalupeczky, 26 people (István Nagyfalussy also writes this) were buried in the tomb under the church between 1735 and 1811. I would like to mention that the Regional Centre for Monumental Care and Nature Protection in Bratislava, 1963. VII. On the 14th, under the number 1085/1963, he declared the Catholic church of the settlement a monument. ; From 1770, for nearly a hundred years, monks served in Bagota. During this time, but also after that, the Ordódy family mostly took care of the object together with the school. ; In the twenties of the 20th century, Miklós Pallay (priest), a retired military priest, held masses from Érsekújvár. One of my informants mentions that Jenő Szikora (probably Dezső Szalva) went to Bagota from Ógyalla (as well as Dezső Szalva). But people from Bagota (and also people from Vék) went to Ógyalla for church ceremonies (resurrection procession, mission, etc.). The tradition of wheat blessing and days of the cross did not exist in Bagota. (Mrs. Ferencné Ürge Margit Krkan, born 1929)"
