Church and Convent of the Virgin Mary

Building, structure

The Order of Saint Ursula, also known as the Orsollites (Ordo Sanctae Ursulae, O. S. U.), founded by Saint Angela of Merici in the 16th century, was the first to set the goal of caring for and teaching young girls to raise them to be faithful, educated, and good mothers. ; The Order of Saint Ursula, founded in 1535, spread throughout the world. Their first missionary, Blessed Mother Mary, educated the natives in Canada in 1634. During the French Revolution, many sisters gave their lives for their faith - they were beatified by Pope Benedict XV in 1920. ; The purpose and task of the order today is still primarily teaching and education, but according to the intention of their founder, they try to adapt to the needs of the time. Angela left her instructions to her order in three books: Rules (Regula), Exhortations, and Legacy. ; Their motto: Serviam - I serve. The sisters pray daily for new vocations. They await the application of generous, enthusiastic young people who want to serve God, who will take over the banner of Saint Angela and Saint Ursula from them and lead the young people to God. ; The Orsotians arrived in Hungary from Austria. In 1676 they settled in Bratislava, two years later in Košice, in 1724 in Nagyszombat, in 1726 in Győr, in 1747 in Sopron, and later in many other cities. ; Opposite the garden of the convent of the Saint Franciscans is the church, convent, elementary school and teacher training institute of the Orsotians. The current building was built by Archbishop Imre Esterházy in 1731, the simple church belonging to it originally belonged to the Evangelicals and was built in 1640. The nuns received it in 1672 through the intercession of Archbishop Kollonics. ; It occupies almost an entire part of the city. It is bordered by the street of the same name, Batthyány-tér, the small Kalapos-utcza and Hummel-utcza.
