The Holy Trinity statue in Érsekújvár
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
In 1740, the city was hit by a plague. In the hope that the danger would soon pass, a statue of the Holy Trinity was erected. This is a cultural and historical monument that is connected to the history of the city, and its construction was completed in 1749. It is an artistic Baroque sculpture group, decorated with Rococo elements, and which gives an idea of the level of sculptural art decorating public spaces at the time. More than likely, it is the work of unknown Italian masters. The sculpture group has been renovated and relocated several times (1827, 1876, 1929, lastly in 1993, when it was restored and placed back on the main square). The statue was last consecrated in October 1993. Its column is conical in shape and decorated with a plant ornament, with the sculpture group of the Holy Trinity on top. In the middle of the column, on the facade, stands the Immaculata on the globe, which is wrapped around by a snake. On the axis of the pedestal are placed the standing sculptures of Saint Sebastian, Saint Roch, and Saint Joseph. In the middle of the pedestal, behind an iron lattice, the figure of Saint Rosalia can be seen lying down. ; The group of statues is also decorated with plant ornaments. On the pedestal, three richly decorated elliptical tablets bear the inscriptions: ; “Restui veteri que empus sprevi honori 1876” (May honor be to those who hope in eternity, 1876) ; “Quae devotam tibi constans perduret in aevum 1875” (Which holds faithfully and strongly in heaven, 1875) ; “Hanc triadi posvere plebis piavolta colummnam 1740” (Elevated by the life of a God-fearing person, 1740)
