The Holy Trinity Chapel in Érsekújvár
Building, structure
The oldest public cemetery in the city was located on the former Szent István Square, today's Bernolák Square, which was closed down in 1872. The Holy Trinity Chapel, built for the glory of God by Jakab Skultéty in 1722, stands on the territory of the cemetery - now a park. The chapel is the final resting place of Antal Bernolák (Anton Bernolák), a parish priest, deacon, teacher, linguist and school inspector. He came to Érsekújvár in 1797 and worked here for 16 years. After the cemetery was closed down and arranged, his remains were reburied and he was buried in a common grave with Mihály Flenger, the city's most important merchant, the founder of the local subsidiary institution (opened in 1829), and priest István Lauro. János Fábián, a priest from Érsekújvár, had a memorial plaque placed on the wall of the chapel. The chapel has been renovated several times, most recently in 1977.
